La Veta / Cuchara Colorado Information
La Veta means the vein in Spanish. The exact origin of the name for the town is unknown, but it is possible it is in reference to the gold or coal veins found here.
La Veta is a small town in Huerfano County Colorado with a population of less than 1000 people. The town sits at just over 7000 elevation on what is called the “front range”, where the Great Plains transition into the Rocky Mountains. La Veta is a historic frontier cattle town originally settled in the mid 1800’s. Many of the storefront buildings in town are well over 100 years old.
Today La Veta is a very special place with a highly eclectic and diverse collection of residents, architecture and scenery. There are art galleries, art and quilt making schools, musicians, theater groups and world famous musical groups in the area. There is a lighted jet strip and a golf course on either side of town and one of the top rated schools in the state. All of this and La Veta still hasn’t lost its small town “Mayberry” type of appeal. La Veta has become home to many people who want to scale down and live a less hectic lifestyle in some of the most beautiful surroundings on earth.

The small resort town of Cuchara is located high in the mountains of southern Colorado. Sitting at around 8,600 feet elevation, the town is nestled between the West Spanish Peak on the east and the Sangre De Cristo mountain range on the west, and completely surrounded by the San Isabel National Forest. The Cuchara River runs through the town and the Cuchara Mountain Resort is immediately south of town.
The resort is closed right now, but there is no end to the number of buyers who are trying to acquire it in order to re-open the resort. The ski resort is very family oriented and the prices not as sky high as in the more famous ski areas of Colorado, (not to mention smaller crowds). There are a few small hamlets in the area. All with great views and that mountain feel about them. The area was originally named Cuchara Camps back in the early 1900’s. For around 100 years people have sought out the cool mountain air in the summer to vacation in Cuchara.
| How many places do you know of where you can see every star in the night sky? La Veta is located half way between Denver and Santa Fe New Mexico so we have very little background light. This makes the sky light up at night with stars!
