Bears In Town
As I drove into town this morning there was a bear standing on the sidewalk in front of Charlie's market. One of the People who works in the store came out to shew him off and he just stood there for a minute until another person came out so he ran across the street. I parked my truck and walked down the street to see where he went and he was going through the trash can behind San Isabel Electric.
We have been going through a pretty dry spell lately and the berries have not been producing yet so all the bears I have been seeing are pretty skinny. They always start coming into town when they can't find enough food in the wild. In recent memory there have been no reports of bears harming people in and around La Veta. But the potential is there so please keep your distance if you come across one.
I have had a different bear up at my place on the ranch about every other day for the last couple of weeks now. My dogs always alert us when they stop by. The temptation is to feed them, but that would be a huge mistake. Once you feed a bear they will literally camp out on your property and eventually they will start tearing things up if they can't find any food.
