Incredible Views

Here in the La Veta and Cuchara areas along with much of southern Colorado we have been blessed with stunning views of mountains, dike walls, pastures, lakes, rock formations and the night sky.

In many ways our area is unique providing views the likes of which can be found nowhere else. Kathy ( my wife ), was telling me yesterday about the interview she saw of Oprah Winfrey  and Tom Cruse and how Oprah was just completely awestruck by the scenery of the mountains in Telluride. We talked about how fortunate we were to be able to live in an area even less crowded and enjoy views and a lifestyle as good if not better than that in Telluride!

When we purchased our property out on Raspberry Mountain Ranch we were already pretty familiar with the area, but one thing made all the difference in the world. I got out, put on my hiking boots and walked every single piece of property that we were considering at the time. As a result we found the location that was perfect for us and we now have 360 degree views to die for.

As we were checking out all the likely candidates we gained a lot of perspective on the different locations. The natural features that make this area so beautiful are incredibly huge in scale. I talk about "Dramatic" views. In many ways Drama is the most correct description for the larger than life views in our area.

My first impulse was to own and build right along side one of the great dike walls or right into the side of a huge mountain. Then as time went on and I started to gain more perspective I noticed that  these dramatic views can only be appreciated from a distance because of their enormous size. A good friend of mine described it best when he said that you can't have it both ways. You either have to have the great dramatic view or be part of it! If you're part of it you really can't enjoy the view of it. That sounds crazy doesn't it. But it's true and I'll be glad to demonstrate it to you if you would like.

That doesn't mean it isn't great to be right in the middle of the drama, you're just going to sacrifice some of the view. The old real estate adage says the three most important factors in real estate are Location, Location, Location. Some things never change!

Just to let you know that I read and enjoy your blog. My husband and I have already purchased our 35 acres in Hole-In-The-Wall and hope to be ready to build in 2 years. For now I'm absorbing every bit of wisdom that I can from the experienced homeowners like yourself. Gayle
