Ski Resort To Reopen?
Reopening the Cuchara Ski Resort? I thought it was just a rumor when I first heard about it. Then I kept hearing about it. Then news started to trickle in about a plan being formed to open and run the resort as a non-profit organization.
There have been countless rumors over the last few years of individuals attempting to buy the resort to reopen it, but they all fell by the wayside, mostly because (rumor says) the current owners (a group of Texas oil people) have been difficult to deal with.
Now the community of people who live in Cuchara are taking matters into their own hands. At first I thought it was a joke, then just another rumor, but then it started to stick. These people are serious and they appear to have no end to people willing to invest, including big money out of state.
The people heading up this drive are serious, educated individuals who are fully qualified to get the resort off the ground. I was intrigued to hear their plan.
At this point the plan is to form an organization set up as a 501.c non-profit. They want to start in phases and slowly over time reopen the entire resort. The first phase would include reopening the bunny slope and ski lodge. They want to have the majority of staff as volunteers and provide programs to teach skiing and to rehabilitate the disabled and war veteran amputees on the slopes.
There are countless hurdles to overcome. The organizers have their work cut out for them. But what a fantastic plan! Now that I have heard their intentions and know the quality of individuals involved I believe they have a good chance of pulling it off.
Good luck!
