The Town Heard

La Veta, Colorado is a unique place. Where else can you think of where you can sit on a bench in front of a grocery store in town and see a full grown buck deer casually walking down main street?

Thats a pretty common site in and around La Veta. The town is small, with only about one square mile within the town's limits. But within this one square mile live a permanent population of three to four dozen deer! They just hang out in peoples yards and parks basking in the sun. We have an ordinance for people to keep their pets on a leash or behind a fence within town limits so the deer are for the most part unmolested. After you have lived here a while it just seems natural to have to stop to let the deer cross the street in front of you.

Everyone in town calls them the town heard. What a place to live! We also have the town bears in the summer and fall. Some years there are a few hanging out in town and sleeping during the day in the trees around town.

Occasionally we have a Mountain Lion or two that hang out around town as well. You will rarely see them even if they are living in town. They rarely come out during the day time. As far as I know no one has ever been hurt by either a bear or lion around town.

Thats just the wildlife in living in town! If you want to see a lot of wildlife head outside of town to one of the state or national forests or one of the local ranches. I cannot remember the last time (if ever) that I have driven on or off of my ranch and not seen plenty of wildlife.

There's plenty of real estate for sale too. Call me for an appointment. 719 679-1309
